japanese lacquer

This magnificent Japanese lacquer card case is from the Charles Goddard Weld Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Boston, USA.

 

One side depicts carp in a river with black lacquer ground with kinpun, ao-kinpun and gold hirame, decorated in gold, aokin and colored hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with encrustations of shell and other materials. The reverse depicts a landscape with similar decoration. It is inscribed 無銘 and dates from 1890, and measures 10.7 x 6.8 x 1.3 cm.
