This painted papier-mâché case is a particularly fine example. It depicts Lismore Castle, the Irish home of the Dukes of Devonshire since 1753. The case may have been produced as a special commission and, although it is not possible to attribute the painter, the letters ‘J & B’ can be seen in the lower right-hand corner. Given the quality of the painting, this most probably stands for Jennens & Bettridge.

THIS FINELY PAINTED PAPIER-MACHE CASE IS PROBABLY BY THE FIRM OF JENNENS & BETTRIDGE
