the french collection
The French Collection of card cases is housed in the Harris Museum, Preston, Lancashire. The largest public collection of its kind, it consists of more than 900 cases collected over a period of 30 to 40 years by Mrs French, and purchased by the Museum on her death.

highlights

Sample groups are on permanent display and the bulk of the collection is available for study. Museum staff are very accommodating: you can handle the cases and take photographs. Viewing is free but a donation to the museum would seem an appropriate gesture.

The cases are stored in a large cabinet with drawers dedicated to a single type of case (categorised by material). This makes it easy if you are interested in a particular material and also means that you can quickly skip a number of fairly common mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell examples if you wish.

Whilst a number of the cases are damaged (having been received by the Museum in this condition), the damage does not detract from the importance of the collection as a whole, nor should it spoil your enjoyment.
