This rare silver case combines mixed metals, a hammered surface and gingko leaf design. Inspired by Japanese metal work, it is by the American jeweller, Tiffany & Co.
In 1876, Tiffany & Co commissioned Christopher Dresser to visit Japan to observe the work and learn the techniques of artists, potters and metalworkers and purchase objects. His purchases inspired a range of jewellery and silverware using gold, silver, and different coloured metals, inspired by natural forms. Many of these items were exhibited at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1878 where Tiffany was awarded the Grand Prize for Excellence for silverware.
This case measures 72 x 108mm and dates to about 1880.
