the cook collection

"For over 50 years I have enjoyed living with and dealing with visiting card cases. I hope that this sale will ensure that the collection, although dispersed, will bring as much enjoyment to the buyers as it has to me.”

Mr Cook first expressed an interest in collecting visiting card cases in the 1950s. At the time, they were inexpensive and, as a collecting field, unidentified. Selling his engineering business in 1963 left him free to pursue his love of the arts and he opened a gallery in Bedford to sell paintings, later opening an antiques hypermarket in Kensington and galleries in London.

He gave up the galleries in later years, choosing instead to deal in other areas of personal interest such as visiting card cases. He said, “I am very
privileged to have had a full and very interesting life and have loved every aspect of it. My only regret is that at the age of 76, I have had to slow down.”

Although it will be a reluctant parting, Mr Cook is keen for other collectors to enjoy his collection.

On 6 April 2004, the Ronald Cook Collection of over 200 card cases came under the hammer at international auction house, Bonhams. Collected by Mr Ronald Cook, a prominent art and antiques dealer in London in the 1970s and 80s, the cases demonstrate one man’s dedication to a highly specialised field.
