A fine Japanese ivory card case decorated profusely with lacquer work and Shibayama-style inlay. The front depicts water fowl by a stream beneath a  willow tree, with bats flying overhead; the reverse  is also richly decorated with cranes and other birds beside a stream. The case measures 3.25 x 4.75 inches and was made around 1870-90 for the Western market - either for export or to be retailed to visitors to Japan.

It sold at auction in the USA in March 2010  for about £2,400.
