Filigree was exempt from hallmarking, so is difficult to date with any degree of accuracy, or know for certain where it was made. In Europe, the Mediterranean island of Malta and  the city of Genoa were known for the quality of their filigree work. Chinese craftsmen also produced fine filigree, although this case bears none of the features of Oriental filigree work.

The inner slip of this case is engraved with the words ‘S B McKim, Baltimore, 1841’. Sarah B Birckhead married Haslett McKim in 1841. This case was almost certainly a wedding gift and shows the status of the McKim family as one of Baltimore’s most prominent families of the time.

The case sold in 2009 for around £1,500.
