This card case is made from birch-bark covered with red felt which has been decorated with dyed moose hair, quills and seeds. Card cases like these were made from the 1830s to the end of the century by the indigenous people of the Great Lakes in North America; the Huron-Wendat village of Lorette was particularly known for its embroidered birch-bark items which were sold as souvenirs to visitors.

Although not rare, cases made of embroidered birch-bark are not common and  red-felt examples in such fine condition are hard to find.
