An Irish bog oak card case depicting Killarney Castle on one side and a rural dwelling on the other; the sides are decorated with cross-hatching, typical of Irish treen from the 18th and early 19th century.

Bog-wood is wood from trees that have been buried in peat bogs and preserved from decay by the bog conditions, sometimes for hundreds or even thousands of years. Similar to ebony , bog oak was used in Ireland for the manufacture of small articles, intended mainly for the tourist or souvenir trade, from the 1820s for over a century, reaching a peak from about 1850 to 1860. Whilst many articles, including mourning jewellery, were carved from bog oak, card cases in this material are not common.

THIS CARD CASE IS MADE OF BOG OAK AND WAS PRODUCED IN IRELAND AS A SOUVENIR FOR VISITORS TO THAT COUNTRY
