Mauchline ware was manufactured in a wide range of finishes. The most common ones found on card cases are tartan, fern, photographic transfer print ware. This rare card case is decorated with chequer ware, a form of geometric ware. Chequer ware is distinguished by its rigidly geometric, polychromatic design, often in tones of cadmium red, green, sepia, black and dark brown, though other colour combinations do exist.
