tiffany enamel and silver

This rare silver and enamel case was made by Tiffany & Co around 1885. It is decorated with champlevé enamel with chrysanthemums in relief of crimson enamel with ochre centres, surrounded by engraved leaves on a sage green ground, with suspension chain It is marked on base and numbered 3381-7494.

Unfortunately, no provenance is available. Whilst it may have been a special commission for a wealthy American, Tiffany will not divulge names of original purchasers, even for antique pieces. A good provenance would certainly enhance its value further.

It was offered for sale by Sotheby's, New York in January 2006. The estimate was $7,000 - $9,000; it realised $7,000 (hammer price), despite a few small losses and areas of wear to the enamel.
