seaweed ware

Although not as some other gallery features, the shell/seaweed pattern on this Mauchline ware case makes it uncommon.

This form of decoration was a direct response to a national craze started by Queen Victoria. On 30 July 1847, the Queen wrote in her diary that she "bathed in the sea (for the first time in my life)". This royal trip sent thousands to follow suit and a day at the seaside quickly became the fashionable thing to do. This, coupled with the Victorians fascination with collecting and cataloguing specimens from the natural world, caused the advent of shell/sea weed ware. However, once the craze died down, so too did the demand and shell/sea weed ware items were produced only from about 1855 to 1875 (unlike fernware which was produced for about 50 years). As a result, card cases decorated in this style are hard to find.
