This case, from the collection of Wladimir Herman, is a very rare example of Cantonese email work. It is made of brass which has been decorated with richly-coloured enamel, both sides featuring a central scene surrounded with borders of trellis work, flowers and foliage. The case measures approx. 3" x 4" and dates from around 1850.

A conservative estimate from Bonhams valued this case at £1,000, although the market value is likely to be significantly higher. The case was purchased at auction in a provincial Danish town, the determined collector battling through a snow storm to get to the sale - such are the lengths that collectors will go to in search of a rare piece.

THE PURCHASE OF THIS RARE CHINESE ENAMEL CASE SHOWS THE EFFORT COLLECTORS WILL MAKE TO OBTAIN A RARE PIECE
