oxford papier mache

This cartouche-shaped lacquer case is finely painted on both sides with views of Christ Church College, Oxford: the obverse shows the Tom Tower and the reverse the Peckwater Quad. Although not signed, this case was probably produced and retailed by the firm of Spiers of Oxford.

Spiers had a shop in the High Street that was well known for its 'fancy goods' and papier mache souvenirs painted with scenes of Oxford and its environs.
