This white buckskin case circa 1890 looks ordinary enough at first glance. But closer inspection reveals a golden mirror monogram ‘E’, for the Empress Elizabeth, applied to the outside and a green sapphire cabochon fastening set in gold. The case is lined with smooth pale leather and bears Parisian gold hallmarks. Inside are ten of the Empress' visiting cards with the name ‘Elisabeth’ printed in gold letters beneath a crown, printed by ‘Ed. Bauche, Boulevard Haussmann, Paris’.
Also present is a piece of an envelope with a mourning band, addressed to ‘Seine Majestät den Kaiser von Österreich, Ofen’ (His Majesty the Emperor of Austria, Ofen) with a mourning seal on the reverse side; 8.5 x 12 cm.
This case was sold by a European auction house in May 2004 for £1,800 (2,400 Euros).
